šŸ”± The Mermaid Workout

Hi reader.
It’s Beverly here. 🩷

šŸ”± The Mermaid Workout

I hope you got your bags packed because we’re going swimming today.

Actually, as long as you bring your swimsuit and a towel, you should be fine.

Today, you’re about to witness a miracle I’ve been planning for quite some time.

I’ll be trading my bunny ears for a mermaid tail.

Okay, maybe that’s impossible, but I’ll tell you one thing—if rabbits could be mermaids, I’d definitely be one. I’d be gossiping with the crabs, playing catch with the dolphins… I’d even make myself extra cute outfits from seashells. Ah, I wish. A bunny can dream…

I’ve always loved swimming and being close to the beach. It’s a shame I don’t live near one because if I did, I’d probably spend every day tanning, swimming and searching for pretty seashells.Ā

I probably wouldn’t even go to work. Which is obviously a terrible idea.

Luckily, I found the next best thing only two neighborhoods away from home—a spa centre that recently opened with a massive swimming pool. The moment I found out, I signed up for a membership with every extra perk I could get. As a bonus, I also have access to several spa treatments.

Chloe thought it was a completely unnecessary purchase at first. Now she’s happily treating herself to massages thanks to my ā€œterrible financial decision.ā€ Funny how opinions change after one good massage.

The good news is that you don’t need an ocean to enjoy swimming. A local pool works just as well.

Back to reality, swimming is one of my favourite ways to stay active. It works almost every muscle in your body, burns plenty of calories, improves your posture, builds endurance and is much gentler on your joints than many other forms of exercise.Ā

One of my favourite things about swimming is that it rarely feels like a workout. Once I’m in the water, I completely forget I’m exercising. Before I know it, the session is over, and I leave feeling refreshed instead of exhausted.

That’s exactly why I decided to create The Mermaid Workout.

Before We Begin:

•Drink a little water first.

•Do a few minutes of gentle stretching.

•Adjust your goggles.

•Don’t worry about swimming fast.

•Take breaks whenever you need them.

Perfect for: Bunny swimmers who are comfortable in the water and want a relaxing full-body workout with a little challenge along the way.

Workout: Approximately 35 minutes.
Optional sauna: 5–10 minutes.

Let’s dive into it.

• 5 Minutes – Warm Up 🐠

I usually start by alternating between one length of breaststroke and one length of backstroke.

There’s no hurry. I’m simply getting used to the water temperature while focusing on my breathing, and you should do the same. Keep a relaxed pace and enjoy the feeling of the water moving around you.Ā

After about two or three minutes, you should feel comfortable enough to move on to the next exercise.

• 10 Minutes – Swim With The Waves 🌊

Begin with one length of freestyle, followed by one length of backstroke. Maintain a steady pace throughout the exercise without rushing. Enjoy the rhythm of the water and continue alternating between the two strokes.

• 5 Minutes – Mermaid Tail šŸ§œā€ā™€ļø

Grab a kickboard and keep your legs together as if you had a real mermaid tail. I’m sure you’ve seen H2O: Just Add Water (as you should), so pretend you’re searching for the Moon Pool.

Use a dolphin kick by moving both legs up and down together while keeping your core engaged. You should feel your abs working—that’s how you’ll know you’re doing it correctly.

It may feel a little strange at first, but you’ll quickly get used to it. And don’t worry about how you look—you’re not training for the Mermaid Olympics. Relax and have fun with it.

• 5 Minutes – Flutter Kicks šŸ™

Looks like your tail is working perfectly. Let’s wake those legs up again.

Keep your kickboard and switch to regular flutter kicks. Move your legs naturally, alternating one after the other beneath the water.Ā

Try swimming one length quickly and the next at a slower pace. I always feel like a giant pair of scissors while doing this.

• 5 Minutes – Speed Challenge 🦈

Pretend a shark just spotted you. Time to swim!

This is the only part of the workout where I really try to push myself.Ā

šŸ”± The Mermaid Workout

Swim two lengths as fast as you comfortably can, followed by one slow recovery length. Set a timer and don’t stop until you hear it beep.Ā

If you’re wearing a fitness watch—even better—you’ll feel it buzz when your time is up.

• 5 Minutes – Cool Down 🪼

This may actually be my favourite part because I genuinely love floating on the surface of the water. From what I’ve heard, you can only do it properly when you’re completely relaxed.

I take slow, deep breaths, close my eyes and spread my arms and legs like a starfish. It feels incredibly peaceful.

If floating isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly okay. Simply hold onto the edge of the pool, rest your head on your arms, gently stretch your body and enjoy those final quiet moments before getting out.Ā

There’s no rush anymore—the hard work is already done.

Beverly’s Tip: My favourite way to finish a Mermaid Workout is with a quick 5–10 minute sauna session. After swimming, the warmth feels incredibly relaxing and helps me unwind before heading home. Just don’t forget to rehydrate afterwards!

I always feel amazing after this workout. I’m exhausted, but in the best possible way. All the stress I’ve built up throughout the day simply melts away, and I know I’m only one shower away from sleeping like a baby.

I get home, hop straight into the bathroom, grab a quick bite to eat, catch up with the girls and finish my evening with a few journaling prompts. Before I know it, I’m already asleep with a huge smile on my face.

šŸ”± The Mermaid Workout

Maybe we can’t actually trade our bunny ears for mermaid tails…

…but for 35 minutes, we can certainly pretend.

This workout is for anyone who feels at home in the water and wants to enjoy every minute of swimming instead of treating it like another chore on their to-do list.

If this workout helped you relax, forget about your worries for a little while or simply made you feel like a real mermaid, then I’d say my mission is complete.

It was a pleasure playing mermaids with you, dear reader.

See you soon!
