Who Ate My Carrots?

Hi reader. 🩷

It’s Beverly Goldenfurs here!

I’ve had the most amazing week because I got paid last Friday. I went out for drinks with my dear friend Ruby Rabbitson, ordered takeouts from nice restaurants and even did a bit of shopping. I was having the time of my life!

I was enjoying my mid 20s when all of a sudden I had to open my bank account...Checking my balance felt horrifying. Talk about a mood-killer. Sound familiar?

Not too long ago, this was my story. Every single month felt pretty much the same as the previous one because I used to live paycheck to paycheck.

I’m not exaggerating when I tell you I would spend about 85% of my income during the first two weeks and the rest of the month would feel like complete poverty.

We're talking instant noodles, soup for days, and even the occasional 48-hour fast just to make it to payday.

I'm not gonna lie—it did wonders for my waistline, but borderline starvation is never healthy. And the worst part? I wasn't willing to change anything about that lifestyle.

I kept telling myself I was still young. I wasn't exactly earning my dream salary yet anyway, so I figured I'd start saving once I earned more. In reality, that time never came because even though I started earning more, I also started spending more.

I was always low on savings and, to be completely honest, the pot was so empty it was gathering dust. I never turned down going out for drinks with friends or coffee dates. Having lunch at a restaurant wasn’t a treat anymore, it was a habit. And so was feeling broke.

Lucky for me, my best friend Chloe Silverpaws is an absolute finance guru. She was one of those people who just seemed to understand how money worked. I could never figure out how she did it, but somehow she always had her finances under control. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that she never joined me on my shopping sprees.

The funny thing was, I couldn't understand how she managed not to spend every last dollar. At the same time, she couldn't understand how I always managed to turn a perfectly good paycheck into an empty bank account.

Of course, she'd tried giving me advice before, but I never really listened. That was, until one day I finally decided it was time to grow up.

We had "the talk"—the same talk I'm about to have with you. Hopefully, it'll be just as useful to you as it was to me.

Before we go any further, there's something you should know. Nothing you're about to read will magically fix your finances. What you do with your pot of gold is entirely up to you. I'm simply sharing the methods that helped me break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle.

So, let's begin.

Imagine your savings as a pile of carrots hidden safely inside your burrow. Every unnecessary purchase is another rabbit quietly sneaking in and helping themselves to one. Some steal a single carrot. Others walk away with half the pile. Before you know it, you're standing there wondering who raided your pantry.

Here's a hint: they've been nibbling away at your carrot stash every single day without you even noticing. But who are they? Meet the usual suspects:

The overpriced coffee addict – "It’s only 5$!"

I'm no fortune teller, but I'm pretty sure the first thing that came to your mind was that big, overpriced coffee you secretly call your guilty pleasure. Am I judging? Not really. Who doesn't need one after crawling out of a warm bed, sitting in awful traffic, and already running late for work? Don't you deserve a little treat before diving into another noisy, stressful day? Of course you do. I used to be one of those "don't talk to me before I've had my coffee" people, so trust me—I get it.

Once or twice a week? Go for it. Three or four times? It's starting to become a habit. Every workday? Now we're talking about an expensive routine. Everyone has rough mornings. Just don't turn your morning treat into a daily lifestyle.

Let's do some quick bunny math.

One coffee costs around $5.

$5 × 5 workdays = $25 a week.

That's roughly $100 a month.

Or $1,200 a year.

Keep that habit for five years and you've spent around $6,000.

🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?

*Six thousand dollars... I'd say that's more than just a few missing carrots.*

*Looks like we've found our first carrot thief. *

I'm not telling you to quit coffee. I'm telling you to stop paying someone else $5 every single morning to make it for you. Buy good coffee. Buy a nice travel mug. Make it at home and take it with you. Trust me, your homemade coffee tastes a lot better when you realize it saves you $1,200 a year.

That $1,200 could pay for your next holiday... or, depending on your taste, just one weekend in Monaco.

The Subscriber - Wait, I’m paying for WHAT?!

Surprise, surprise.

Of course, I'm being sarcastic because I'm pretty sure I'm not telling you anything new. Somewhere out there, you're probably still paying for subscriptions you completely forgot about. This is an intervention.

I need you to do one thing: sit down and go through every single subscription you're paying for. Yes, every single one.

I'm not going to lie—this was probably my least favorite part of the whole process. It actually required me to pay attention to my bank statements, and honestly, that's nobody's idea of a fun afternoon. But trust me on this.

Few things feel as satisfying as canceling a subscription you completely forgot you were paying for. Suddenly, you're no longer funding some random free trial you signed up for months ago for a website or app you barely even remember visiting.

And don't think I only had one. I had five. Maybe six. The worst part? I couldn't even be bothered to cancel them.

Instead, I'd move my money to a different account and hope the payment would fail.

Spoiler alert—it never did. Those subscriptions don't give up that easily.

*Every month, another carrot quietly disappears from your stash… or maybe more.*

So don't be lazy. Sit down, go through your transactions, contact customer support if you have to, and cancel every subscription you don't recognize. Now let's talk about the subscriptions you actually use. Do you really need all of them? Yeah... don't answer that. You already know you don't need Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, YouTube Premium, and three other subscriptions running at the same time.

And if you truly can't live without having the best of both worlds, at least get a family plan and split the cost with your friends or family. There's absolutely no reason to pay full price if you don't have to.

The Bottled Water Buyer – “I forgot my bottle… again”

"Oh, come on. It's just a bottle of water."

That's exactly what the Bottled Water Buyer wants you to think.

Sure, they're not leaving the store with a $300 coffee machine or a shopping cart full of things they'll never use.

They're just staying hydrated. Respectable.

But here's the problem. Whether you walk out holding a fancy bottle covered in tropical flowers or the cheapest one on the shelf, you're still paying for something you probably didn't need to buy in the first place.

I'm genuinely curious. Does bottled water really taste that much better than the water you could pour into the reusable bottle sitting in your kitchen? Yeah... I didn't think so either.

🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?
🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?

The funny part is that nobody ever questions it. It's only a couple of dollars. Then you buy another bottle tomorrow. Then another on Friday.

*Looks like the Bottled Water Buyer has been taking a sip from your carrot stash too.*

Before you know it, you've spent enough money to buy a decent reusable bottle, a water filter, and probably still have cash left over. Buying bottled water every day follows the exact same logic as grabbing coffee every morning. One purchase is harmless. Hundreds of them quietly empty your wallet without ever asking for permission.

And let's not forget the bonus feature: every bottle comes wrapped in plastic that you'll use for about ten minutes before throwing it away. Way to be eco-friendly!

A reusable bottle and a water filter cost money too. The difference is that you buy them once.

Congratulations. You finally found a way to keep both yourself and your bank account hydrated.

*The Bottled Water Buyer has officially been kicked out of your burrow. *

The Sales Slave – “I saved like 40%… after spending 150$”

"Oh my God! Look what I bought for only $3!"

Unfortunately, yes. I can imagine it perfectly because that's exactly how my boyfriend sounds whenever he finds discounted sweet treats. He's basically a junkie for yellow discount stickers.

To be fair, I'd call him a Mini Sales Slave. The real ones proudly announce: "I saved 40%!"

Did you, though? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you just spent half your paycheck on things you never planned to buy.

Congratulations.

*You walked straight into the trap of the Big Bad Wolf of retail. And the scary part? He simply leaves the carrots on sale and waits for the rabbits to come to him. Then eats them both.*

🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?

Sales aren't there because someone suddenly decided to be generous.

Stores know exactly what they're doing. Giant red price tags, countdowns, "Only two left!" signs—they're all designed to make you focus on the discount instead of the final price.

Here's the only question you need to ask yourself: Would I still buy this if it wasn't on sale?

If the answer is yes, great—you probably found a bargain.

If the answer is no… you didn't save 40%. You spent 60%. And there's a very big difference.

Because here's the truth… It's only a bargain if you were planning to buy it anyway.

So do your carrot stash a favor and think before you tap that card.

The Impulse Shopper – "I'm obsessed with it!" *hates it a week later*

Now this person is like the twin sibling of the Sales Slave. The difference is that while the Sales Slave is drawn in by huge discounts, the Impulse Shopper is driven by one simple thought: "I just liked it."

Maybe it was a candle that smelled amazing. Maybe it was a hoodie in their favorite color. Maybe it was a kitchen gadget they didn't even know existed five minutes ago. It wasn't planned or necessary. It simply felt right in that moment.

If you're generally an emotional or impulsive person, chances are you'll recognize yourself here. You don't buy it because you need it—you buy it because you want it. In your mind, there's always a reason: "I'll definitely use it." "It's not that expensive." "I've wanted something like this for ages." The problem is, those reasons disappear as quickly as the excitement does.

*Excitement gone, carrots none...*

Unlike the Sales Slave, this habit isn't really about discounts.

Before you buy something, ask yourself: Why am I buying this? Do I actually need it, or do I just like the idea of owning it?

I'll answer that for you—you're a dopamine junkie.

Okay, that may have been a little rude, but face it: that shiny new thing gives you a little rush that feels really good.

Now here's the next question: What will happen if I don't buy it immediately?

I'll tell you: probably nothing. If you leave the store without it, your day will continue exactly the same. Go home. Sleep on it. If you still want it tomorrow, go back and buy it. But chances are, you'll have forgotten all about it.

The Fine Diner – "Cooking? That’s a problem for tomorrow."

Hey, remember that restaurant we went to last week? It was absolutely stunning.

I'm talking live music, candlelit tables, dishes that arrived with their own little performance, and waiters who somehow made pouring wine look like an Olympic sport. It's definitely my favorite place.

We should start going there twice a week... or should we?

If this sounds like you, let me stop you right there before you convince me to spend my own paycheck trying that place tomorrow. I'm sorry to disappoint, but I have a very unpleasant truth that might hurt a few feelings.

*There is no bigger enemy to your carrot stash than eating out several times a week.

You're leaving the burrow unattended and wide open for carrot thieves... and the Fine Diner is a greedy one.

🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?
🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?

Don't get me wrong—I absolutely love restaurants. I love discovering new places, trying food I could never cook myself, and convincing myself I needed dessert.

But restaurants have one job: to keep us happy, full, and coming back for more. Our job is to make sure they don't empty our wallets while they're at it. So... am I telling you to stop going out? Absolutely not. I'm simply saying that "once in a while" shouldn't quietly turn into "every other day." That lunch break. That Friday dinner.You probably don't even remember what you had for lunch three Tuesdays ago.But your bank account does.

Every meal you cook at home is money you get to invest somewhere else.

You could invest in a really nice pair of shoes...

...or, you know... a savings account.

The Trend Chaser – "Everyone has one. Obviously I need it, too."

🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?
🥕 Why Is Your Bank Account Leaking?
Who is the Trend Chaser?

Is it the friendly elderly neighbor who bought a wireless vacuum with absolutely no idea how to use it?

Could it be the girl who spent years saying she'd never wear Mom Jeans... right until her favorite celebrity showed up wearing them on the red carpet?

Maybe it's the guy who owns a perfectly respectable car but suddenly convinces himself that life simply won't be complete without leasing a Porsche.

Or maybe...

Maybe the Trend Chaser isn't a person at all. Maybe it's a little voice living inside all of us.

The one that whispers, "Everyone else has one."

The one that convinces us we're somehow falling behind because we don't own the latest phone, the newest sneakers, or whatever social media decided was life-changing this week.

The funny thing is that trends don't actually sell products. They sell belonging.

*Keeping up with the other bunnies costs way too many carrots.*

Nobody wants to feel left out. Marketing knows that. Brands know that. Influencers definitely know that. And now – you know that. Make this knowledge count.

Don’t spend money you don’t have on things you don’t need to impress people who won’t notice.

Here's the good news.

Trends expire. Credit card bills don't.

~~~~~~
Looks like you've finally figured out who's been snacking on your carrots.
Now it’s your turn to guard your burrow.
Some intruders are easier to chase away than others.
Start by throwing out one carrot thief at a time.
Soon enough, there won’t be any left.
~~~~~~

And remember: the safest burrows aren't the ones with the biggest carrot stash. They’re the ones with no trespassers.
